Most palms common to the Las Vegas valley, Mexican fan palms, date palms, and similar varieties, do well with trimming once or twice a year, depending on species and growth rate. Fast-growing varieties in irrigated landscapes may need attention more often than slower-growing palms in drier settings.

Dead, hanging fronds are a real fire hazard, especially against a home in Las Vegas heat and wind. They're also a common nesting spot for rats and other pests, which is often the more immediate reason homeowners call for trimming.

It's become common to see palms trimmed into a "pineapple" or "hurricane cut," stripped down to just a tuft of fronds at the top. This looks tidy for a season, but removing healthy, green fronds stresses the palm and can slow its growth and reduce its cold tolerance for years afterward.

The better standard is to remove dead and dying fronds, seed pods, and boots, and leave healthy green fronds in place, even if it looks slightly less manicured in the short term.

Short palms are sometimes manageable for homeowners with the right tools, but tall palms need professional palm tree trimming with rigging or lift equipment. Falling fronds and boots from height are seriously dangerous, and improper technique from the ground can damage the trunk.
